I'm posting this picture for Craig Edwards because he gave me the

recipe. It's the blue celadon using our P feldspar that we dig

nearby. There is a little jun effect on the handle side, where the

ash turned it opalescent. This piece was fired on the front top, very

hot, cone 12-13. It ran a little and I had to grind the foot a bit.

The coarse feldspar and quartz dyke is about two feet thick.

Firemouth and Yohen Pots

This pot was fired in the firemouth. It has more ash and shine.

This was fired in the Yohen chamber where charcoal is introduced. It was rubbed for 2 days (This pot was probably rubbed by me. I always tried to pick this shape when we were polishing pots.) When it came out of the Yohen chamber, the pot was dull looking because of a thin oxide coating from the heavy reduction. The polishing gives it a satiny surface. In the old days, rice straw was used to polish. Today, sandpaper, 3M green and red abrasive pads and then a cotton cloth.

Here's another:

Craig's blue celadon, using Petersen Feldspar (local rock) and crabapple
twig ash instead of whiting. The piece on the left is on porcelain,
right on white stoneware. Next time I will try to get it thicker, like
the rim of the bowl.

Irabo glazed shgaraki clay pot. Cobalt glass chunks on the lugs. I found the cobalt glass bottle half melted in a pile of burnt trash in the farmer's field. I also have some chunks of glass from a glass blower.

This was fired in a cross draft kiln based on the Ruggles Rankin
kiln. The firing was about 15 hrs.

This was fired in a double bourry box kiln 20 hrs.

The box at the lower left hand of the drawing (two would be made, one for each firebox), made of hard brick would reduce the amount of air going into the firebox, to increase the heat there. The step-down grates would provide air for large diameter wood, so stoking would be infrequent. Long wood can be stoked above the grates, to provide ash to cover the pots in the firebox. Pots would be bisqued in the "normal" ware chamber. If the temp gets too hot for bisque, only one side could be fired at a time.

I find this Korean pot very inspirational. I believe that it is one of
Korean's national treasures. It comes from the period where stoneware
is just starting to come into it's own.

I tested a lineblend of Korean Kaolin and Neph Sye. First tile on the left is 70% Korean Kaolin and 30% Neph Sye, 2nd is 60/40, 3rd is 50/50 , 4th is 30/60 and last is 30/70 First and second tiles look like Avery slip.

Hello all,

Here's a picture of one of the local feldspar outcrops. The pink stripe
is the feldspar, surrounded by quartz. Double good! That's my friend
Dick Mackey digging some to take home to Alturas.

When the new little handmill gets here, I'll try crushing some of the
quartz too.

reading "Turners & Burners: The Folk Potters of North Carolina" by Charles
G. Zug. I think I may do a big run of these jugs to fill my kiln, whenever I
get it built.

Joe coming on shift, me going off. When the kiln gets to a certain
point, it starts "huffing" when the door is open. Does anyone else use a
wood chute like this?
